Agenda

c. Future Meeting – 2006 Haywards Heath, 2007 Scottish Society. A joint meeting with Maxillofacial anaesthetists societies suggested and raised no objections.

4. President's report:

Joint Neurosciences' Council – Membership of JNC identified. The Neurologic Alliance is looking at long term neurologic conditions. The majority of this will not affect anaesthesia directly but the document will have effects on NeuroICU and Neuroanaesthesia.

The JNC has also been involved in Basic Neuroscience Training. The NAS has already decided that anaesthesia should not be part of that but continue within the mainstream of anaesthesia. Meeting next week re further discussions. We may be asked to provide support for training in Neurocritical Care.

a. Specialists Societies – We have taken on the use of the Specialist Societies Secretary. We have been supportive at WSM and will be presenting a workshop next WSM in Manchester. The AAGBI has a professional organisation to organise meeting. The local organisers of future NAS meeting may wish to use this facility.

b. Abstract – we must continue to publish abstracts in peer-reviewed Journals.

c. Clinical Excellence Awards – The NAS can propose members for 10 Bronze, 5 Silver/Gold. It has to be a transparent process and the NAS will nominate people based on their contributions to Neuanaesthesia. Members were unanimous in their support.

An application has been received for a Travel Grant to visit Ghana. Elizabeth Steele who won the award last year, will be asked to do a short presentation on her trip to San Francisco.

b. Granat investment - £10000 kindly donated. This will be invested to keep the prize going. Mrs Granat has insisted on paying the £200 pounds for this year's prize.
c. Travel Grant - £1000 awarded last year. This year's application is currently being considered.
d. Membership fees – There still seems to be a problem with the collection of membership fees. This problem will hopefully be sorted out in the next few months. Membership fee remains £15 per year.
e. Registration fee for trainees should be reduced by 50%. The Society will underwrite any loss resulting from this change in policy.
f. McDowell Lecture – this is to continue and for us to take over control of the funds.

6. Secretary's report- AGM Bristol 2005
Membership continues to grow steadily. The Society now has 332Full/current members, 37 Trainee members, 28 Retired members, 19 Overseas members. An approximately 8% increase on last year.
We have now moved our database and mailing list to the AAGBI Specialist Societies Secretary. This is working very well and in my opinion well worth the cost. The mailing list is continually updated, but yet again, all members are urged to send their email address as this is by far the easiest, fastest and cheapest form of communication. Contact names to be updated and there are now 36 units with contacts throughout Great Britain & Ireland. There were the usual requests for mailing lists and members were still happy to have names released for these purposes.
Although it was agreed that from 1st January 2005, all communication with the NASGBI will be electronic, and despite the web site being set up in order that all members can update their current email addresses, our aim has not been achieved. Members are asked to approve this change so that we may move over to electronic communication including Agenda and changes to constitution items.
Dr Manthri continues to co-ordinate the website. The web site is active and has been used effectively as a tool for announcements and exchange of ideas.
The society continues to contribute to Education by organising seminars in Portland Place, The Association of Anaesthetists of GB and Ireland new headquarters. The Society will contribute to the WSM of the AAGBI by hosting a workshop on Head injury where 4 Lectures will be presented.
The Society has been represented at the Joint Neurosciences Committee. One of the Officers usually attend, and Dr Peter Farling has attended the last meeting and has given you his report. I attend the Critical Care for Neurosiences's Patients organised by the Modernisation Agency. The final report has now been published in Electronic format only.
The Society continues to improve relations with sister societies and met with officers of the Society of British Neurological Surgeons.
Overseas Lecturers – Mentoring system. Members are encouraged to contact secretary to contribute to WSM and Lectures abroad on behalf of the NAS. The NAS will contribute to the lecturer's expenses and this will be indicated on the web site.
Members agreed to support the proposed study on Tracheostmies in ICU patients to be run jointly by the ICS. There will be a separate Neuro group. The data will be managed by the ICS and a contribution on £10000 will be made from NASGBI in order to support the study. This project has not progressed because the main organisers of the study felt that including Neuro paitents complicates data collection and analysis. Professor Menon and I are currently looking at other ways of including neuro patients in the study.
Future Meetings:

Euroanaesthesia 2005 will be in Vienna

Euroanaesthesia 2006 will be held in Madrid

EuroNeuro 2005 is being held in Cambridge Sep 1st to 3rd.

9. AAGBI Logo – The Council will take on the task of examining the need for a new logo.

10. Any other business –

The audience joined the officers in thanking Dr Samantha Shinde and Dr John Carter and all the Consultants in Bristol for hosting an excellent meeting.

11. The president handed over the President's Medal of Office to Dr Martin Smith, and Dr Cruckshang handed over the post of treasurer to Dr Mike Nathansen.

10. Date of next meeting – Brighton 10th and 11th May 2006.
