NCEPOD Topics

Dear Linkman:

NCEPOD is requesting interested parties to submit topics for future studies. A review of previous NCEPOD publications shows that postoperative deaths following neurosurgical procedures has not been looked at by them and that there is little in the published literature about issues affecting neurosurgical services as a whole. I therefore feel that NASGBI should put forward a proposal that this should form the basis of a future study.

I am keen that a society backed study should reflect the wishes of its members as to the sort of questions we would be looking to answer. I have attached a draft list of some issues that spring to mind hoping to stimulate feedback and other suggestions from members.

Please could you forward this message to all members in your hospital and ask them for their comments and ideas. If there is a topic that is covered by NICE guidelines or a National Service Framework please let us know; any references would also be gratefully received. The closing date for the submission is 30th September, so could all responses be collated and then submitted to president@nasgbi.org.uk by 16th September to give me some time to prepare the application.

If NCEPOD accepts our proposal, as well as their routine questions, they will use our suggested areas of interest in the review of the notes. This would seem to be an excellent opportunity to use a study of postoperative deaths to inform us how well neurosurgical services are delivered and which areas need to develop further.

Best wishes

Plat Razis

President, NASGBI
