In keeping
with our roots as a Travelling Club, our Annual Scientific Meeting changes
location every year to allow different departments to host the meeting and give
us a flavour of their city. This year’s meeting was hosted by Newcastle, next year it’s in Belfast and 2013 in Cardiff. The society has evolved
substantially from its early days and now has a constitution (on the website), 10
members on council and is a registered charity. Our role in education has
recently increased because of revalidation. Not only is NASGBI responsible for
maintaining the Level 3 CPD matrix up to date, but in conjunction with the
Royal College of Anaesthetists and the Association of Anaesthetists of Great
Britain and Ireland
will be providing much of the Level 2 and 3 teaching in neuroanaesthesia. Besides
covering the breadth of teaching required, we are looking at the use of
workshops to enhance the learning experience. In terms of training, the society
has contributed to the RoyalCollege’s curriculum and
offers an annual Travel Fellowship for those wanting to gain experience in
other centres. The society actively promotes
research and in 2009 awarded a £10,000 grant through the National Institute of
Academic Anaesthesia. Not only has this resulted in our inclusion on its
Research Council but we have also been awarded NIHR non-commercial partner status
which significantly increases the opportunities for conducting ambitious
projects. We continue to encourage the presentation of free papers by trainees
at our annual meeting. The rate of change in the
provision of neuroscience services appears to be increasing and it is important
that anaesthetists are included in those discussions. By becoming involved in
the review of Paediatric Neurosurgical Services, being a member of the Joint
Neurosciences Council, NIAA council, close ties with NCcNet as well as our
involvement in teaching and revalidation, we hope that NASGBI informs and
influences those changes on behalf of our members. May 2011
